About This Spot

Stepping into Cafe 88 feels like uncovering a quiet little nook tucked away on a bustling street in Charlottesville—an unpretentious space where the warmth isn’t just from the kitchen but radiates from the genuine care woven into each moment. The pace is unhurried, a gentle retreat from daily rush, inviting you to take a breath and settle in amid modest decor and lush green plants that hint at the family roots behind the counter. It’s the kind of place where the noise is the comforting hum of casual conversations and the sizzle from the open kitchen.

Here, the menu reads like a conversation with a Taiwanese home cook, where familiar comfort dishes sit alongside specialties that reveal a deeper culinary heritage. The scents and textures tell stories: braised beef slowly melting into tender noodles, crispy tofu with a surprising richness that comes from thoughtful preparation, and chicken bites infused with basil leaves that transport you halfway across the world. Portions are generous, echoing a spirit of abundance uncommon in typical dining spots, encouraging sharing and lingering.

The atmosphere reflects a balance of straightforward hospitality and a no-nonsense passion for authenticity. You might notice the occasional brusqueness in service, but this only underscores the focus here—food and tradition over frills—where the real connection happens through carefully crafted flavors and the rhythms of a family-run kitchen. Patrons return, drawn by consistent freshness and the distinct tastes that have quietly stood the test of time.

For a local escape that offers more than just a meal, Cafe 88 invites you to slow down, savor something true to its roots, and appreciate the human moments behind every plate.

Authentic taiwanese food in a hidden little corner! Amazing fried tofu, friendly staff and owner woman, really affordable prices, especially given the massive portions (see photo) <3 thank you!

What’s Taiwan known for? Food! Half the menu is the Americanized Asian food but the other half is the authentic Taiwanese food ???????? just ask Super great people that have a green thumb- you can see the beautiful plants when you visit The picture are the authentic authentic menu options

Food is still as good as I remember it from over 10 years ago. Everything is made fresh and has individual flavors. Owner's attitude has gotten worse over the years, very typical of Asian Tiger mom. Come here if you want a place that serves up mostly authentic Taiwanese dishes at a good price point with not too much fuss. Ignore the rudeness and you might be able to just enjoy the flavors of the food. I'll skip this place next time I'm in Cville.

I cannot believe we have this restaurant here! Authentic Taiwanese food. The popcorn chicken made me cry. The beef noodle soup was average good. The bento box was amazing. The restaurant was run by an old couple. The service may not be the greatest, but they got the job done. Will definitely visit again to try other dishes.

Authentic Taiwanese food! They also have American style Asian food. We have Taiwan style chicken popcorn and fried tofu as starters, they are so good! I loved the chicken with basil leaves! The tofu is kind of surprised me, tofu has been braised and flavored before been fried, so it’s not like regular fried tofu need have some sauce with it. We also have Braised pork on rice and pork chop combo. I loved them! Not too salty but super flavorful! The eggplant in the combo is so good I might order a full size portion next time. The decorations indoor are cute, especially all the succulent planters and lucky cats. The outdoor area is surrounded by beautiful flowers and herbs!

This is mom and pop Taiwanese cooking. Some excellent, flavorfull dishes. An older shop located in an older shopping center. Why pay for atmosphere just to enjoy really good food? Just ENJOY!!

Food is decent - not as flavorful as I would have expected, but they at least give you a good portion for what you get. I got the Kung Pao chicken combo and the orange chicken combo. The combo comes with eggplant which is DELICIOUS - sweet and savory- and was probably the best thing on the plate. The orange chicken wasn’t the syrupy sweet kind you might get from another Chinese food restaurant. It tastes like they use actual orange essence to flavor the chicken - it’s subtle and not overpowering. There was a wide variety of things on the menu to try, so I will likely be going back to try something different. Would recommend if you’re in the area. Cant sit inside but there are a couple tables outside to sit if you want to say. I would recommend ordering ahead because it took a long time for the food to cook.
